First, you need to understand what styles of interior design are currently available. Mainstream styles include Modern Minimalist, Scandinavian, Southern, Vintage American, Country Rustic, Coastal, Organic Modern, Traditional, Postmodernist, Mid-Century Modern, etc. These decorating styles are not listed in order of popularity as different interior design styles are popular in different regions.
In addition, many design styles have subcategories. For example, coastal styles may be categorized as Modern Coastal, Grandmother Coastal, East Coastal, Island Style, Hamptons, California Casual, Coastal Bohemian, Florida Coastal, and other styles.
In fact, when choosing a decorating style for your home, I don't recommend limiting yourself to a particular look, label, or trend. Instead, I recommend creating your own unique look by trusting your instincts and paying attention to what appeals to you in each decor style.
Elements in Different Design Styles
So how should you discover the right interior design style for you?
1. First, you need to consider your lifestyle and habits.
How you use your home and what essential interior activities are most important to you. Reflecting on how you want to live and feel in your home will help you determine which functional elements and design features are important to you and guide your interior design choices. Consider your daily life, hobbies, and interests. For example, do you like to entertain guests or do you prefer a cozy, private space? Do you have a lot of items you want to display? Also, consider the architecture and location of your home. Often, one's interior design style needs to be adapted to the unique architectural features, era and location of the home itself. For example, if you live in a Craftsman-style home with lots of dark wood trim, you may want to go with a mid-century modern style, which goes well with this style of home.
2. Discover your favorite styles based on your existing accessories.
Your existing furniture, clothing, and artwork can be side by side to show your favorite design style. You can take note of the colors, patterns, and materials that interest you as you examine the various spaces in your home and use these as references for your designs.
3. Go elsewhere to gather inspiration
You can choose to go to other places for inspiration. For example, visit local museums, art galleries, and your favorite hotels and restaurants. You can refer to their design styles and find the colors, materials, and of course, the little things or details that interest you.
4. Try a new style of decoration
Don't be afraid to try new styles of decorating, you can always find the right one for you. However, we recommend that you look at a number of complete design plans or visit furniture stores, showrooms, galleries, etc., rather than "remodeling" your home, which carries significant risks and sunk costs.
5. Trust your intuition
At the end of the day, you will realize that the most important aspect of discovering your unique interior design style is trusting your instincts and following them. Your home is a personal space, and your design choices should resonate deeply with you. Pay attention to how certain colors, patterns, textures, and materials make you feel, consider your emotional response to different design elements and choose the ones that really resonate with you. Remember, there is no right or wrong when it comes to decorating your home, so keep experimenting until you find a look that works for you.
